Malaseb Medicated Shampoo for Dogs & Cats – Antibacterial & Antifungal Skin Treatment - 250 ml
Malaseb Medicated Shampoo – Antibacterial & Antifungal Shampoo for Dogs & Cats
Malaseb Medicated Shampoo is a veterinary antibacterial and antifungal shampoo specially formulated to treat seborrhoeic dermatitis associated with bacterial and yeast infections in dogs and to assist in the treatment of ringworm infections in dogs and cats.
Developed by Dermcare-Vet, Malaseb combines two active ingredients, chlorhexidine gluconate 20g/L and miconazole nitrate 20g/L, to provide targeted antimicrobial action.
Malaseb helps remove excess skin oils, loosen scales and reduce the microorganisms associated with certain skin conditions.
It is particularly useful for dogs experiencing greasy skin, unpleasant skin odour, flaking and irritation associated with bacterial or yeast overgrowth.
For cats with ringworm, Malaseb may be used as part of a veterinarian-directed treatment program.

Dual-Action Antibacterial & Antifungal Formula
Malaseb contains two complementary active ingredients.
Chlorhexidine Gluconate – 20g/L
Chlorhexidine is an antiseptic ingredient with antibacterial activity.
It helps control susceptible bacteria associated with certain skin infections, including Staphylococcus pseudintermedius.
Miconazole Nitrate – 20g/L
Miconazole is an antifungal ingredient active against certain yeasts and fungi.
It helps manage Malassezia pachydermatis yeast and assists in reducing dermatophyte fungi associated with ringworm.
Together, these ingredients provide targeted treatment for the skin conditions specified on the product label.
Treatment of Seborrhoeic Dermatitis in Dogs
Seborrhoeic dermatitis can develop when the normal balance of microorganisms on a dog's skin is disrupted.
Signs may include:
- Greasy or oily skin
- Flaking and scaling
- Unpleasant skin odour
- Redness
- Itching
- Irritated skin
- Recurrent skin infections
Malaseb is indicated for seborrhoeic dermatitis associated with Staphylococcus pseudintermedius bacteria and Malassezia pachydermatis yeast.
The shampoo helps remove excess oil and scale while reducing the microorganisms associated with the condition.
Because underlying allergies, parasites or other medical conditions can contribute to recurrent skin disease, veterinary assessment may be required.
Antifungal Support for Ringworm
Ringworm, also known as dermatophytosis, is a contagious fungal infection affecting the skin and coat.
Malaseb is used as an aid in the treatment of ringworm, including infections involving Microsporum canis.
Its antifungal action helps reduce infectious fungal spores on the coat, which can assist in limiting environmental contamination.
Important: Ringworm often requires additional veterinary treatment, particularly in cats. Malaseb should not be relied upon as the sole treatment unless specifically directed by a veterinarian.
Ringworm can spread between animals and people, so appropriate hygiene and environmental cleaning are essential.
Helps Remove Excess Oil & Skin Scales
Dogs affected by seborrhoeic dermatitis may develop excessive skin oils and flaky skin.
Malaseb's cleansing formulation helps:
- Remove excess grease
- Loosen and wash away scales
- Clean affected skin and coat
- Reduce surface microorganisms
This makes it useful as part of a treatment program for diagnosed seborrhoeic skin conditions.

- Wet the animal thoroughly with clean water.
- Apply Malaseb Medicated Shampoo at several points across the coat.
- Massage gently into the coat and skin.
- Use a sponge if required to help create a lather and distribute the shampoo.
- Use approximately 1–2mL per kilogram of bodyweight, ensuring adequate coverage.
- Leave the shampoo in contact with the skin and coat for 10 minutes.
- Supervise the animal throughout the contact period to prevent licking or inhalation of shampoo foam.
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
- Towel dry and keep the animal comfortable.
Important Contact Time
Malaseb must remain on the skin and coat for 10 minutes before rinsing, as directed by the manufacturer.
Rinsing immediately after application may reduce the effectiveness of the treatment.

How Often Should Malaseb Be Used?
Dogs – Seborrhoeic Dermatitis
Malaseb is commonly used twice weekly during active treatment.
Once the condition has improved, weekly or less frequent maintenance bathing may be recommended by a veterinarian.
Treatment frequency and duration should follow the current Australian product label and veterinary advice.
Dogs & Cats – Ringworm
For ringworm, Malaseb is commonly used twice weekly as part of a veterinarian-directed treatment program.
Additional antifungal medication and environmental management may be necessary.
Do not discontinue ringworm treatment solely because the skin appears normal. Follow your veterinarian's recommendations for confirming that the infection has cleared.
Bathing Cats with Malaseb
Cats may find bathing stressful, so careful preparation is important.
- Use comfortably warm water.
- Wet the body gently while avoiding the face.
- Massage the shampoo through the coat.
- Maintain the required 10-minute contact time.
- Prevent licking throughout treatment.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Dry the cat carefully and keep it warm.
Seek veterinary advice if your cat becomes distressed or cannot be safely bathed.
Managing Recurrent Skin Conditions
Medicated shampoo can help manage certain infections, but recurring skin problems may have underlying causes.
These can include:
- Environmental allergies
- Food allergies
- Flea allergy dermatitis
- Other parasites
- Hormonal conditions
- Skin barrier disorders
Veterinary assessment can help identify contributing factors and establish an appropriate long-term treatment plan.
